Zambia’s Deadly Nshima, Aflatoxin Outbreak Leaves 400 Dogs Dead
Zambians have sent into a panic mood after news went round that Nshima, a staple food is having abnormal Aflatoxin levels.
Aflatoxin toxicity may result in nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, convulsions, and other signs of acute liver injury. Long-term exposure also leads to various complications like growth retardation, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
News broke out when it was reported that some 400 dogs and many uncounted for, fell ill and eventually died.
Authorities jumped on the matter and did a research and discovered that some millers were above the recommended levels.
However, the health minister has not named which brand has been found wanting leading to public outcry. The public has been left in suspense not knowing which brands to avoid.
