The University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Faces 180 – 200 Suicide Cases Every Week
The University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka is reportedly handling between 180 and 200 mental health cases every week, with most involving young people.
In March 2025 alone, UTH’s mortuary recorded more than 130 suicide-related deaths, averaging about five “brought-in-dead” cases per day among individuals aged 19 to 35.
This is a heartbreaking trend, especially as many young people continue to struggle in silence and are unwilling—or afraid—to open up about their challenges.
These figures show that although many cases are reported, the actual number of completed suicides varies by region and time period. However, the 2025 data indicates a sharp rise in fatalities compared to the previous year’s national total.
