Mainza Chipenzi, one of Zambia’s finest vocalists, has finally opened up about a deeply personal chapter in his musical journey. Known to many as the voice that once blended seamlessly with the late Daddy Zemus, Mainza has long lived under that collaborative shadow—despite having an impressive catalog of hit songs to his own name.
In a recent interview with Gary Masano, Mainza reflected on the unique and unexpected chemistry he shared with Zemus. Initially skeptical about the partnership—especially given Zemus’s ragga muffin style, which contrasted sharply with Mainza’s R&B roots—he didn’t think their collaboration would work.
But everything changed the moment Zemus played the now-iconic “Juju Lover” chords. From that moment on, the two created what Mainza fondly describes as a “delicious” musical fusion.
Their partnership produced a string of beloved hits. But the untimely death of Daddy Zemus left Mainza devastated—and suddenly alone. What followed was a difficult and confusing period, made worse by hurtful comments from fellow artists. “Now that Daddy Zemus is gone, let’s see how you’ll make it on your own,” Mainza recalled being told.
Those words cut deep. He withdrew, retreating into himself. But it wasn’t long before he rose from the pain, channeling it into music that reaffirmed his place in Zambian music history. Tracks like Ndekulolela, Nabwalya, Kalimu System and more followed—this time, working alongside the likes of Kelvin Mwese, General Ozzy, Joe Chibangu, and Ruff Kid.
Though the loss of Daddy Zemus left a void, Mainza didn’t just survive it—he transformed it into a legacy. Through resilience and raw talent, he stepped out of the shadows and carved out a legend of his own.
