John Chiti Cautions Against Misuse of Sunscreen Among People with Albinism
Musician and activist John Chiti has expressed concern over the growing misuse of sunscreen within the albinism community. Known for his strong advocacy for persons with albinism, Mr. Chiti shared this concern after responding to a distress call from individuals requesting sunscreen to treat a sore.
He explained that people with albinism need sunscreen because albinism is a congenital condition characterized by a lack of pigment. This is evident in the skin, hair, and eyes, making their skin more vulnerable to the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sunscreen helps prevent sunburns and reduces the risk of developing skin cancer.
However, Mr. Chiti noted that many people misunderstand its purpose. “Sunscreen is not a treatment for sores or skin diseases. He further urged people with albinism not to ignore any signs of skin problems, as they could be cancerous, and instead to seek professional medical attention.
