Hichilema to attend Suluhu inauguration ceremony in Tanzania
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has departed for Tanzania to attend the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Samia Suluhu Hassan, who secured victory in the country’s recent elections marred by mass protests and allegations of irregularities.
According to reports, the opposition claims that about 700 people have lost their lives in the unrest that erupted on voting day after key opposition candidates were either barred or imprisoned.
President Hassan, who becomes the first female president to secure a second term, will be sworn in today at a military parade ground in Dodoma. The ceremony will be closed to the public for security reasons.
Following the inauguration, President Hichilema is expected to return to Zambia immediately, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations has confirmed.
